SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that fewer than 5,000 tickets remain for the California Clasico at Stanford Stadium on Saturday, June 30, presented by Sutter Health. Kickoff is slated for 6:45 p.m.
The California Clasico is the Bay Area’s biggest summer sporting event, with the rivalry match between San Jose and the LA Galaxy drawing more than 50,000 fans every season since its inception in 2012.
San Jose holds a 4-1-1 record in six prior contests against the Galaxy at Stanford Stadium. Last season, the Quakes scored two late goals, including a 93rd-minute strike by Shea Salinas, to win 2-1. The game was attended by 50,617 fans, fifth most for any MLS regular season match last season.
The first 10,000 fans that enter the stadium will receive a Quakes hat with #BeatLA inscribed across the back, courtesy of Sutter Health. Fans can enjoy the pregame festivities in the Bud Light Devotion Deck, a fan zone located near the intersection of Galvez Rd. and Nelson St, with a selection of beer and wine, a variety of food trucks, partner activations, live music and inflatable games.
Before the match, a group of skydivers will fly the game ball into the stadium, equipped with an Earthquakes-themed parachute and a giant American flag. Senior Airman James Pratt, a heavy equipment operator assigned to the 28th Civil Engineer Squadron, will perform the National Anthem. He was recently named the 2017 Air Force Entertainer of the Year. The Earthquakes will have flags of all 23 teams currently competing in Major League Soccer, held by Sutter Health employees, and a large soccer ball balloon as part of the pregame celebration.
To celebrate ‘Salute to the Troops’, the Quakes will honor the United States Armed Forces at halftime, recognizing original Rosie the Riveters from World War II and members of all five branches of the military. There will also be a live painter on-field as part of the celebration.
Following the match, the Earthquakes will treat fans to the largest fireworks show in the Bay Area, courtesy of Pyro Spectaculars by Souza, Inc.
As a result of the fifth-annual Military Appreciation campaign and generous donations from fans, sponsors and others close to the Earthquakes organization, 3,500 members of the armed forces will attend the match free of charge.
The California Clasico at Stanford Stadium has become known for its dramatic finishes and results. In addition to last season’s heroics, Quakes fans witnessed a 4-3 comeback victory in 2012, despite goals from Galaxy superstars David Beckham and Landon Donovan. The following year, 10-man San Jose used a pair of stoppage-time goals to stun LA 3-2. The Quakes also came back in 2015, erasing an early deficit to win 3-1, and scored a 90th-minute goal in 2016 to earn a 1-1 tie.
In 2016, the Clasico was the most watched MLS regular season game of the season. One million people tuned in to watch the match, including 548,000 between the ages of 18-49, making it the first-ever MLS match to draw such ratings on Spanish language television. It was the first MLS game to be viewed by one million people since David Beckham’s Galaxy took on D.C. United in 2008.
