The San Jose Earthquakes had one of their most impressive weeks in recent memory, despite missing two of their three Designated Players. Traveling to Sporting Park on Wednesday, the Quakes earned their first win in Kansas City since 2004 and handed SKC a 5-0 loss, their first home defeat of the season. Forward Chris Wondolowski and midfielder Cordell Cato each tallied a brace, while midfielder Shea Salinas notched two assists. Wondolowski surpassed 10 goals on the season and became the first player in MLS history to score 10+ goals in six straight seasons. Midfielder Anibal Godoy also scored in the match, marking his first career MLS goal.
The Earthquakes then traveled to RFK Stadium and defeated D.C. United 2-0 on Saturday night, winning their second straight game on the road and recording their third shutout in a row. Wondolowski scored the club’s first goal in the fourth minute and Salinas later added a second. Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham recorded his ninth shutout of the season.
For their contributions to the team’s success, Salinas, Godoy and forward Quincy Amarikwa were all named to the MLS Team of the Week (Week 25), while head coach Dominic Kinnear was named Coach of the Week. The Quakes also had three players – Wondolowski, Cato and defender Clarence Goodson – named to the Team of the Week’s ‘Bench’ as honorable mentions.
The Earthquakes head back to Avaya Stadium to play the LA Galaxy in the final installment of the 2015 California Clasico on Friday, August 28, presented by AdvoCare. The match kicks off at 8 p.m. and will air live on UniMas, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

Last MLS Game
Earthquakes 2, D.C. United 0; August 22, 2015; RFK Stadium, Washington D.C.
The San Jose Earthquakes scored early in the first half and notched a second goal early in the second half on the way to a 2-0 victory over D.C. United at RFK Stadium. San Jose has now won three games in a row and outscored opponents 8-0 over that stretch. Chris Wondolowski and Shea Salinas scored the goals for the Quakes and David Bingham recorded his ninth shutout of the season. For the second straight match, San Jose burst out of the gate with an early goal. Shaun Francis received a pass from Quincy Amarikwa in the box and his low shot was parried by United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra. The rebound fell to Fatai Alashe, but his shot was deflected to Wondolowski just outside the six-yard box. He calmly slotted the ball past Dykstra to the far post for his 105th career goal, moving him past Dwayne De Rosario into sole possession of sixth all-time in goals in MLS history. The Quakes defense held firm for the rest of the half to send San Jose to the locker room with a 1-0 advantage. Marvell Wynne broke up a D.C. counter attack in the 16th minute to prevent a goal and Clarence Goodson and Victor Bernardez cleared a number of threatening corners and crosses to keep D.C. off the board. Just seven minutes into the second half, San Jose doubled the lead after some great work from Quincy Amarikwa. After receiving the ball at midfield, he dribbled past one defender and then ran 30 yards to the edge of the box before finding Salinas to his left. Salinas curled a right-footed shot to the back post for his second goal of the year for a 2-0 lead. Bingham came up huge in the latter stages of the match with an impressive stop on Davy Arnaud. The D.C. United midfielder received a pass in space on the left side of the box with only Bingham to beat. Bingham rushed off his line, made himself big and deflected Arnaud’s shot. Goodson recovered and cleared the loose ball out of danger to preserve the clean sheet.

Last Game vs. LA Galaxy
Earthquakes 2, LA Galaxy 5; July 17, 2015; StubHub Center in Carson, California
The San Jose Earthquakes got two first-half goals from forward Quincy Amarikwa, but fell to the LA Galaxy 5-2 at the StubHub Center. The Quakes were without two of their three goal-scorers - forward Chris Wondolowski and midfielder Cordell Cato - from the two teams' previous meeting this season. Amarikwa made his first start on the road for San Jose since being acquired and defender Jordan Stewart returned from his one-game absence due to suspension. In the 12th minute, Amarikwa perfectly timed his run to beat an offsides trap and midfielder Fatai Alashe delivered a ball over the top. After doing well to control the lofted pass, Amarikwa attempted a left-footed shot, but his effort was saved by Galaxy keeper Brian Rowe. In the 22nd minute, defender Marvell Wynne sent a pass down the right flank and midfielder Sanna Nyassi sprinted up the sideline to track it down. Nyassi played a quick ball across the penalty area and Amarikwa one-timed a shot from about 15 yards out, beating the keeper. It marked Amarikwa's first goal of the season and first with San Jose since October 7, 2009. Just three minutes later, Amarikwa doubled his scoring total. Following a free kick by midfielder Matias Perez Garcia, the ball was batted around and fell loose in front of goal. Amarikwa was the first to get to it and calmly slotted his shot into the bottom-right corner of the net. It marked the first multi-goal game of his career. In the 30th minute, Los Angeles was able to cut their deficit in half. After being awarded a penalty kick, forward Robbie Keane converted to pull the home side within a goal. Seven minutes later, LA pulled level. A ball played low across the box found its way onto the foot of midfielder Steven Gerrard at the back post. Gerrard one-timed the ball past keeper David Bingham and into the net. The Galaxy took a 3-2 lead in the 64th minute. Gerrard hit a low free kick across the face of goal and Keane redirected it goal-ward. LA would add two late goals - a penalty by Keane and a header by forward Sebastian Lleget - to extend their lead to 5-2.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
Team of the Week Selections
Following their phenomenal road trip, the Earthquakes had three players named to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 25 – midfielders Shea Salinas and Anibal Godoy and forward Quincy Amarikwa. All three players were selected for the first time this year. Dominic Kinnear was also named Coach of the Week. Additionally three Quakes players were appointed to the Team of the Week’s ‘Bench’ – forward Chris Wondolowski, midfielder Cordell Cato and defender Clarence Goodson. With the bench included, San Jose had seven total selections this week, two more than any MLS team has had in a single week this season.
Three-Game Winning Streak
The Earthquakes have been red hot of late, winning three consecutive games. On Aug. 14, San Jose defeated the Colorado Rapids 1-0 at Avaya Stadium. Although Colorado may be at the bottom of the Western Conference, they have gone 4-2 against all other opponents since the start of July, including a shutout win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC. On Aug. 19, San Jose walloped Sporting Kansas City 5-0 at Sporting Park, handing SKC their first home loss of the season. Sporting KC had the league’s best points-per-game average heading into Wednesday night’s contest. Just three days later, the Quakes defeated D.C. United 2-0, which marked D.C. United’s second home loss of the year and first since June 6. At the time of the contest, D.C. was leading the Supporters’ Shield Race with 44 points. San Jose now has the opportunity to extend their winning streak to four when they take on the LA Galaxy, who now has the best record in Major League Soccer.
Making a Case for Goalkeeper of the Year
David Bingham is making a case for himself for Goalkeeper of the Year. He posted his ninth shutout of the year on Saturday against D.C. United, placing him in a tie for third in the league, just two behind the league leader. He is second in MLS in saves (86) and is fourth in saves percentage (73.5). He is also currently riding a 284-minute shutout streak.
Historic Night in DC for Wondo
Chris Wondolowski made more history against D.C. United with his goal in the fourth minute. The goal moved him past Dwayne De Rosario into sole possession of sixth all-time in MLS history with 105 goals. He is now just three behind Jason Kreis for fifth. Additionally, he moved closer to the all-time lead for game-winning goals with the 36th of his career. He is now four behind Jeff Cunningham for second all-time and five behind Landon Donovan for the all-time lead.
Marvell Wynne Hits 250
With his start against D.C. United, defender Marvell Wynne reached 250 starts for his MLS career. He has made 260 total appearances in MLS.
Road Wins Piling Up
With their victory over D.C. United on Saturday, the Earthquakes now have five road victories in MLS in 2015. That total is the second highest in the league this season, trailing only Vancouver Whitecaps FC, who has seven. The five road wins are the most for San Jose since the 2012 season, when they posted nine wins.
Back-to-Back Road Wins
San Jose earned consecutive wins on the road for the first time since defeating Real Salt Lake (2-1) and Chivas USA (1-0) in September of 2013. The last time the club posted consecutive shutout wins on the road was against Toronto FC (3-0) and Seattle Sounders FC (1-0) in March of 2012.
Lockdown in the Back
The Earthquakes have had an impressive month of August defensively as they have posted four shutouts in their five August matches. Additionally, they have posted three consecutive shutouts and the team has not allowed a goal since the 76th minute of their Aug. 8 match against the Houston Dynamo, a 284-minute shutout streak.
Scoring Five on the Road
San Jose has played 280 regular season road games and scored five goals on Wednesday for just the third time in team history and the first time since August 8, 2001 at New England. The 5-0 win over SKC marked the Quakes largest ever margin of victory on the road and the only time the team has scored five goals while keeping a clean sheet. San Jose is the only team in MLS to rack up five goals in a single game on the road this season.
Road Warrior
Chris Wondolowski has now scored 48 goals on the road since 2010, more than double any other player in MLS.
Immediate Impact
Newly acquired midfielder Anibal Godoy has played three matches with San Jose and the Quakes have won all three games and outscored opponents 8-0 in those matches.
Ending Home Dominance
The Quakes faced two of Major League Soccer’s top home teams last week and they came away with two impressive wins. Sporting Kansas City was 8-0-4 at home in 2015 entering the match on Aug. 19 and they had not lost at home since Oct. 26, 2014. Additionally, San Jose had lost eight straight matches in Kansas City, dating to Aug. 14, 2004. The Quakes ended those dominant streaks with a 5-0 victory.
Three days later, San Jose traveled to D.C. to face D.C. United at RFK Stadium. United boasted a 9-1-3 record at home coming into the match and had outscored opponents 27-16 in those games. San Jose jumped on the board early with a goal in the fourth minute en route to a 2-0 win.
Amarikwa Continues Strong Play
Opponents just can’t seem to keep Earthquakes forward Quincy Amarikwa off the score sheet. Amarikwa notched another assist on Saturday night vs. D.C. United and has now recorded four goals and three assists in eight matches since being acquired in a midseason trade with Chicago. He has notched a goal or assist in each of the last four matches for San Jose. In addition to his assist vs. Sporting KC on Aug. 19, Amarikwa earned the penalty that led to a goal by Wondolowski. He has drawn six penalties since the start of the 2014 season, while no other player in MLS has drawn more than three.
More Wondo Milestones
Chris Wondolowski netted two goals Sporting Kansas City on Aug. 19 and both were history making. His first-half penalty kick was his 10th goal of the season, making him the first player in MLS history to score 10 or more goals in six consecutive seasons. Then in the second half, he scored a diving header to finish off the Quakes 5-0 rout of Sporting. That goal was his 100th goal in an Earthquakes uniform. He is the first San Jose player to hit 100 with the club and one of four players to score 100 goals for one club [Taylor Twellman, Landon Donovan and Jaime Moreno].
Wonderful in White
The Earthquakes have performed tremendously well while donning their white and red alternate uniforms. In six matches this season with the white kits, including both of their games last week, the Quakes are 5-1-0 and have outscored opponents 16-5 in those matches. Individually, forward Chris Wondolowski has tallied seven goals in those six contests and has been kept off the score sheet just once.
Lock Down Defense at Home
San Jose’s defense has been stellar at Avaya Stadium this season, allowing a total of four goals in eight MLS matches. With their clean sheet against Colorado on August 14, the Quakes have now shut out their opponents in five of their last six matches at their new venue [W 1-0 vs. VAN (4/11); W 2-0 vs. CLB (5/16); D 0-0 vs. DAL (6/7); D 0-0 vs. POR (8/2); W 1-0 vs. COL (8/14)].
Drawing Free Kicks and Taking Them
Not only does Quakes midfielder Matias Perez Garcia take the majority of the team’s free kicks, but he earns them as well. Perez Garcia has drawn 64 fouls this season, the 3rd most in Major League Soccer.
Quakes Among MLS Leaders
Currently, several Earthquakes rank near or at the top of numerous statistical categories. Among them are:
- Matias Perez Garcia – 64 fouls suffered (3rd in MLS)
- Matias Perez Garcia – 4 game-winning assists (t-1st in MLS)
- Matias Perez Garcia – 94 corner kicks (3rd in MLS)
- David Bingham – 86 saves (2nd in MLS)
- David Bingham – 9 shutouts (t-3rd in MLS)
- David Bingham – 73.5 save pct. (4th in MLS)
- Chris Wondolowski – 12 goals (5th in MLS)
Greatest Six-Year Span in MLS History
Including 12 goals so far this year, Chris Wondolowski has tallied 98 goals since the start of the 2010 season, the most by any player over a six-year span in MLS history. Wondolowski still has the remainder of this season to add to his league record. Only three other players ever registered more than 80 goals in a six-year span – Taylor Twellman (91 from 2002-07), Roy Lassiter (88 from 1996-01) and Carlos Ruiz (81 from 2002-07).
MLS Goals Since 2010
Chris Wondolowski has been by far the league’s most efficient striker since 2010, leading the league in goals during that time span:
1. Chris Wondolowski - 98 goals
2. Robbie Keane – 68
3. Alvaro Saborio - 64
4. Kei Kamara - 55
T5. Thierry Henry – 51
T5. Sebastian Le Toux - 51
T7. Landon Donovan - 48
T7. Fabian Espindola – 48
9. Dominic Oduro - 44
10. Dwayne De Rosario - 42
Kinnear Can Keep a Lead
Teams under head coach Dominic Kinnear are 126-11-43 when scoring first, a .819 winning percentage. As head coach of the Earthquakes, Kinnear has only lost twice when his team scored first, a 27-2-8 record overall.
Halftime Success
Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 110-4-23 when leading at the half, including a 6-1-2 mark so far in 2015. They were 6-0-2 in 2014, 6-0-3 in 2013 and an impressive 12-0-1 in 2012, with the only draw coming against Portland on Oct. 27 at JELD-WEN Field. In 2011, the club was 4-2-2, 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 6-1-0 in 2008, 7-0-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage.
Making the First One Count
The Earthquakes are 109-13-31 since 2001 when scoring the first goal. The club is 7-1-1 so far in 2015, after going 5-1-4 in 2014. They were 11-1-3 when scoring first in 2013. In 2012, San Jose was 14-2-2, their two losses coming at Vancouver (2-1) on May 5 and at Montreal (3-1) on Aug. 18. The club was 7-4-5 in 2011, 12-0-2 in 2010, 6-1-5 in 2009 and 8-1-3 in 2008. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (13-0-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time.
