On this day in Earthquakes history, it took San Jose just 90 minutes to shock the MLS landscape.
The Quakes scored a season-high five goals, notched several player milestones and kept a clean sheet in the club’s 5-0 drubbing of Western Conference foe Sporting KC.
Best part about it? No one around the league predicted it. Literally.
Sure, it was a great day at the office for the Quakes, but it’s the way they won that will make that night one for the record books.
Playing without two designated players against a club that boasted a 8-0-4 record at home, the Quakes jumped out to an unprecedented fast start, tallying in the 3rd minute behind midfielder Cordell Cato. After a penalty kick conversion by Chris Wondolowski in the 17th minute and a first-career goal in the 27th minute by Anibal Godoy, San Jose found themselves up to 3-0 going into halftime, a feat the Quakes Twitter account had to have fun with.
Some may have expected a second-half letdown but goals from Cordell Cato in the 58th minute and a second from Wondolowski in the 61st minute erased any doubt of a Kansas City comeback.

- First brace of Cordell Cato’s MLS career.
- With two goals Chris Wondolowski moved into a tie with Dwayne De Rosario for sixth all time in MLS history with 104. He also now has scored 100 goals as a member of the Earthquakes.
- Chris Wondolowski notched his 17th career multi-goal game Wednesday night, tying him for fourth all-time in MLS history.
- Shea Salinas made his 100th career start for San Jose Wednesday night and with his two assists he is now tied with Ramiro Corrales for fourth all time in Quakes history with 32.
- David Bingham recorded his 100th career save on Wednesday night.
