PORTLAND, Ore. – The San Jose Earthquakes fell to the Portland Timbers 2-1 Saturday night at Providence Park. After being forced to make two substitutions in the first 33 minutes, with Shea Salinas and Quincy Amarikwa replacing defender Kevin Partida and forward Danny Hoesen, respectively, the Quakes made a late push with midfielder Florian Jungwirth scoring in the 87th minute.
Portland’s Samuel Armenteros noted a brace for the home side, finding the back of the net in the 14th and 53rd minutes. Jungwirth tallied his third goal of the season for the Quakes on Quincy Amarikwa’s through ball to conclude the scoring. Amarikwa’s assist is his second in 2018, and his 11th all-time for the Quakes.
The Quakes will now travel Quebec to take on the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo on Saturday, July 14. The match will kick off at 4:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

On his overall thoughts after the match:
“After the first 20 minutes we conceded one goal and suffered an injury to our left back. After 30 minutes we had to sub out Danny [Hoesen] also, so two of the regular players out after 30 minutes and one goal conceded after 15 minutes. In the first half we didn’t get into the rhythm of the game. I must be frank and say that we played against a really good team this evening and Portland deserved the victory. Even if the game was just 2-1 and we had some big chances at the end of the game, I must be frank and say that we played against a really good Portland team this evening.”
On the team’s resilience:
“Even though we have had too many defeats, we are still in every single game. We have lost by more than one goal in just one game, but they are still defeats. We have to win games. Tonight, we played against a team that controlled the game right from the first second. We did have some chances, but overall they controlled the game and deserved three points this evening.”
On playing Portland on the road:
“First of all, they have a good team and a good coaching staff. On top of that, they have a packed stadium and a nice atmosphere. They’re a good team for sure. We’ve now played them two times in the league and have defeats from both games. For the moment they are a little better than us. That’s the reality.”

On the match:
“We tried to get a goal to come back in the game. It was an open game. Portland had more possession and some good chances as well. In the second half, we had three or four good chances and we needed a goal and it was a great ball that Quincy [Amarikwa] played in to me. I didn’t know that I was so fast. It was a great ball in the right moment and I decided to shoot from about seven yards. It was a great assist from Quincy and it’s always a happy moment when you a score a goal.”
On losing Danny Hoesen early in the match:
“It always affects the team if your best player has to get substituted. I mean he has 10 goals, works very hard and makes amazing runs. Without question he’s our best player. If you lose him after 30 minutes, it hurts. To be honest Quincy came in and had a great game, with some good shots and he worked his butt off. Great respect to Quincy as well.”
On playing at Providence Park:
“It’s a very tough place to play. Portland is one of the best teams in the Western Conference. Probably has one of the best atmospheres in the league, maybe with Atlanta now, so it’s a very hard place to win. If they get an early goal it gets harder and harder. It’s always hard to play at Portland and get points.”
