NEW YORK – In what has been described as “certainly a fluke,” Major League Soccer announced Tuesday that the winner of the Alcatel Major League Soccer Player of the Week honor is Columbus Crew SC's Gyasi Zardes, and not a player from Atlanta United FC.
The honor was created with the intention of recognizing a player in MLS for stellar performance, but in practice it has been generally accepted that it will only go to a different player from the Atlanta United FC starting XI each week.
