NEWS: Three Earthquakes Players Named to Preliminary U-23 U.S. Olympic Roster Ahead of Qualifying Tournament in Mexico

2020 - Jackson Yueill - USMNT

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes forward Cade Cowell, goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski, and midfielder Jackson Yueill have been named to the United States U-23 National Team preliminary roster for the upcoming Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament from March 18–30 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The final 20-player U.S. roster will be announced soon.

The United States have been placed in Group A with Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, and Mexico. Team USA will face Costa Rica on March 18 (2:00 p.m. PT) at Jalisco Stadium, Dominican Republic on March 21 (12:30 p.m. PT) at Akron Stadium, and Mexico on March 24 (6:30 p.m. PT) at Jalisco Stadium. All three matches will be broadcast live on FOX Sports 1, TUDN, and on the Concacaf Official App.

All three Earthquakes players recently participated in the U.S. U-23 National Team camp last month. Following the camp, Marcinkowski and Yueill were selected to represent the senior national team in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago on Jan. 31.

Cowell, 17, is age-eligible for both the 2020 Olympics (being played in 2021) and 2024 Olympics. He signed a Homegrown Player contract with San Jose prior to the 2019 season, becoming the youngest signing in club history at the time (15 years and 102 days). Cowell had a breakout year for San Jose in 2020, making his MLS debut on March 7 and becoming the youngest player to appear in a match in club history and fifth youngest in league history. He later scored in his first career start vs. the LA Galaxy on Aug. 29 and finished with 17 total appearances. The Ceres, Calif. native has made three prior appearances for the United States at the U-16 and U-17 levels. Cowell was the youngest player called to the U-23 camp last month, 15 months younger than the next youngest player.

Marcinkowski, 23, has competed extensively at the youth national team level and has also received four prior senior national team call-ups (May 2019, January 2020, December 2020, January 2021). He has appeared in all nine training camps for the U-23s this cycle. Marcinkowski also competed at the 2017 Concacaf U-20 Championship and the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup. During the 2020 MLS season, Marcinkowski made 11 starts, recorded four shutouts and earned a 6-3-2 record.

Yueill, 23, has made nine prior appearances for the senior national team as well as two appearances for the U-23s. Yueill started in three of the four matches that led to the USA finishing first in Concacaf Nations League Group A in 2019. Yueill was also part of the U-23 team that traveled to Mexico for the Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship last March before the tournament was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Named the Quakes’ Young Player of the Year in both 2019 and 2020, Yueill has missed just four total regular season matches over the last two seasons and played a team-high 1,861 minutes in 2020.
