SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes have sold more than 40,000 tickets to the California Clasico against the LA Galaxy at Stanford Stadium on Saturday, July 1, presented by Sutter Health. The match starts at 7:15 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on Univision, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF. The event has sold out for the past five years with crowds of more than 50,000, including a California Clasico-record of 50,816 in 2016.
The first 10,000 fans that enter the stadium will receive a California Clasico scarf (pictured above), courtesy of Sutter Health. Fans can enjoy the pregame festivities in the Bud Light Fan Zone, with a Bud Light Beer Truck offering beer and wine, a variety of food trucks, partner activations, live music and inflatable games. The Quakes merchandise store will also be in the Fan Zone, where supporters can purchase Quakes gear including a limited edition Quakes scarf, inspired by the California flag. This year, the Fan Zone will be in a new, more accessible location closer to the stadium entrance by the Galvez and Nelson intersection.
Before the match, a group of skydivers will fly the game ball into the stadium, equipped with an Earthquakes-themed parachute and a giant American flag. Former Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and Afghanistan War Veteran Mark J. Lindquist will perform the National Anthem. Lindquist has performed several sporting events, including various NFL, MLB and NCAA games. The Earthquakes, along with more than 100 Sutter Health employees, will also honor first responders, including paramedics, firefighters and police, with an on-field celebration.
At halftime, the Quakes will honor the United States Armed Forces, recognizing World War II veterans and members of all five branches of the military and their families as part of ‘Salute to the Troops’.
Following the match, the Earthquakes will treat fans to the largest fireworks show in the Bay Area, courtesy of Pyro Spectaculars by Souza, Inc.
As a result of the fourth annual Military Appreciation campaign and the generous donations from fans, sponsors and others close to the Earthquakes organization, 3,500 members of the armed forces will attend the match free of charge.
The California Clasico at Stanford Stadium has had more than its fair share of dramatic finishes and results. In 2012, Quakes fans witnessed a 4-3 comeback victory, despite goals from Galaxy superstars David Beckham and Landon Donovan. The following year, 10-man San Jose used a pair of stoppage time goals to stun LA 3-2. The Quakes also came back in 2015, erasing an early deficit to win 3-1, and scored a late goal in 2016 to earn a 1-1 tie.
Last year’s California Clasico, broadcast on Univision, was the most watched MLS regular season game in 2016. One million people tuned in to watch the match, including 548,000 between the ages of 18-49, making it the first-ever MLS match to draw such ratings on Spanish language television. It was the first MLS game to be viewed by one million people since David Beckham’s Galaxy took on D.C. United in 2008.
