With the clock running down on first game in MLS history on April 6, 1996 and the crowd getting anxious, one of the United States’ greatest strikers ever took matters into his own hands. Eric Wynalda received a pass deep in D.C. United territory, slipped the ball through Jeff Agoos’ legs and curled a shot to the far post to set off a raucous celebration at Spartan Stadium. And thus MLS was born. Wynalda hit for double digits in goals and assists that first season and earned a spot on the MLS All-Star Team, while winning MLS Goal of the Year. He would go on to score 21 goals and notch 29 assists for the San Jose Clash over his three seasons.
