Russell’s six years as a player with San Jose coincided with the club’s most successful stretches and the Seattle native was right in the thick of many key moments. Playing every match in 2001, Russell had a career year with three goals and nine assists and carried that momentum into the playoffs with a goal against Miami in the semifinal series and an assist in the MLS Cup win over the LA Galaxy. His cross in the 2003 MLS Western Conference final set up Brian Mullan’s late equalizer as the Quakes came back to beat Kansas City 3-2. He finished with five goals and 20 assists for San Jose. He has been a Quakes assistant coach for 10 seasons and also spent four years as head coach of Quakes affiliate Reno 1868 FC.
