Not only was Gavric one of the key players on the inaugural 1974 team, he also spent time as player-coach that year when Ivan Toplak went to coach the Yugoslavian National Team that year. Known for his toughness and great defensive instincts, Gabbo was the leader of the early Quakes teams in the NASL. His outstanding play in the 1975 NASL Indoor Tournament helped San Jose capture the title and earned him co-MVP honors with Paul Child. After serving as player coach until 1976, he moved retired as a player and remained head coach through the 1978 season.
