One of the best passers in the history of the club, Ekelund formed one of the most successful midfield pairings in team history with Richard Mulrooney. When they played together in 2001, the team went 13-0-2. After helping the Quakes win MLS Cup with an assist on the winning goal in the MLS Cup Final in 2001, Ekelund had a tremendous 2002 that earned him a Best XI selection. His half-volley free kick against Columbus will forever be etched in Quakes fans minds. He kicked off the Quakes 2003 MLS Cup Final win with one of the best free kicks in team history, a blast that hit the back of the net before Zach Thornton could react.
