SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes are set to unveil the largest drum ever to be used in professional sports, making its debut on Saturday night at the club’s season opener. The drum, along with the previous announcement of Chuy Gomez as house DJ, will further enhance the matchday experience for all fans in attendance throughout the season.
Painted black and blue, the drum is 109 inches in diameter, 46 inches wide and has a one-inch thick solid-wood shell. The single-piece drumhead was created by Remo, the world’s largest drumhead company, and features the Earthquakes crest and club’s impact pattern. A giant replica of Krazy George’s famed drum, it features images of Krazy George and retro logos of the Clash and NASL Earthquakes. Krazy George started his career as a professional cheerleader with the Earthquakes in 1974.
The drum will be officially unveiled when the Quakes host the Montreal Impact on Saturday, March 2. Gates open at 5 p.m. for a 6:45 p.m. kickoff, and all fans will receive an SJ74 hat.
The drum was assembled locally by Splash!Events in San Jose and will be used at various points on matchday, including pregame ceremonies, warm-ups, kickoff and when the Earthquakes score a goal. Krazy George will be using the drum to lead fans in the popular Earth-Quakes chant pregame, and the team will welcome celebrities to hit it throughout the season.
Additionally, the Quakes will also be introducing a Man of the Match award following each home victory, which will see the player and a fan receive engraved mini mallets and have a photo opportunity on the field.
