SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has acquired Brazilian defensive midfielder Judson Silva Tavares on a season-long loan, using Targeted Allocation Money, with an option to buy from Tombense. Known simply as Judson, he will occupy an international roster spot on the Quakes’ roster, pending receipt of his P1 Visa and ITC.
“Judson has always been a very important player for his clubs,” said Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda. “His tireless work ethic and physical style of play are evident in the games I’ve watched. His ability and willingness to cover a lot of a ground will make him an invaluable piece of our defensive structure next season.”
Judson, 25, has spent the last three years on loan with Brazilian club Avaí FC. Originally joining the team in 2016, Judson helped his side earn promotion to the top-flight Série A by finishing in second place of 20 teams with a 19-10-9 record and conceding the second fewest goals in the league. Although Avaí finished mid-table defensively in 2017, their league-low 29 goals scored sent the club back to Série B. Judson finished with 5.24 interceptions per game that season, third in Brazil’s top league.
He opted to remain with Avaí and help them pursue promotion in 2018 despite interest from first-division clubs, ultimately achieving his goal by anchoring the league’s best defense en route to a 16-9-13 record and third-place finish.
“We identified Judson six months ago and felt strongly about signing him after scouting live and meeting with him in person,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. “I think the most valuable input we received was from Matias himself, who played the position at a high level and understands its importance at the heart of our game. He was looking for a player with distinct qualities, and Judson’s ball-recovery skills and leadership fit the desired profile.”
The native of Ares, Brazil has proven to be a steady contributor for Avaí, making more than 90 appearances for the club across Série A/B (league), Copa do Brasil (national cup) and Copa Rio (state cup) competitions in the past two seasons.
Judson began his career at América FC in 2011. He spent his first few seasons on loan with various clubs before signing with Tombense in 2016. Following his transfer, he was immediately loaned to Avaí, where he remained until joining the Earthquakes.
