SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes forward and 2010 MLS Budweiser Golden Boot winner Chris Wondolowski will throw the ceremonial first pitch when the Oakland A’s host the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:05 p.m. PT. The game will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet California.
Wondolowski is the second Earthquakes player in recent history to be honored before an A’s game. Geovanni, the first Designated Player in club history, took the mound in 2010.
Wondolowski has tallied five times so far in 2011, tied for third-most in MLS. He also leads the league in shots taken with 36, and is third in shots on goal with 14. One year ago, the Danville, Calif. native scored a league-high 18 goals and finished No. 3 in the Volkswagen MVP voting.
Soccer exploits aside, Wondolowski has some experience on the baseball diamond. He was an all-star middle infielder for San Ramon Valley Little League and won the 1997 PONY League World Series at age 14 while playing shortstop and second base for the Danville Rockies. Wondolowski also played two years of baseball for De La Salle High School along with New York Mets outfielder Chris Carter.
The Oakland Athletics are in the midst of a four-game home stand against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Minnesota Twins.
