The Quakes return to MLS action with a doubleheader this week after defeating the LA Galaxy 3-2 in the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals last Monday and winning 4-1 win over Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt in a friendly on Friday.


The club will travel to New York to take on the Red Bulls on Wednesday, July 19 at 4:30 p.m. PT, before heading to Washington to face Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. PT. Both matches will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the New York Red Bulls 2-0 behind goals from midfielder Fatai Alashe and forward Chris Wondolowski. San Jose nearly broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute. After Red Bulls midfielder Felipe slipped near half-field, Wondolowski broke away and set up a one-on-one with Robles, but narrowly sent his shot wide left. Seven minutes later, the Quakes were able to take the lead. Midfielder Matias Perez Garcia touched a pass to Alashe at the edge of the penalty area and his deflected shot snuck past Robles at the far post. New York nearly equalized to start the second half. In the 47th minute, halftime-substitute Bradley Wright-Phillips took a quick left-footed shot from the center of the box. Goalkeeper David Bingham fully extended to his left to make the save. The Quakes doubled their advantage in the 55th minute. Shea Salinas sent a pinpoint cross from the left flank to Wondolowski, who headed it past Robles. Wondolowski’s goal drew him level with Ante Razov for the fourth most career goals (114) in MLS history.


History of the Quakes – Red Bulls Rivalry

The two sides were part of the 10 original MLS clubs from the league’s inaugural 1996 season, when these teams were named the San Jose Clash and New York/New Jersey MetroStars … The Earthquakes had a 10-game unbeaten streak against New York from Aug. 9, 1998 - July 2, 2003, posting a 6-0-4 record during that stretch … That 10-game unbeaten streak is the third-longest against a single opponent in San Jose club history … New York and San Jose had a pair of classic shootouts in 2003 and 2004 … On July 2, 2003, the Quakes and then-MetroStars tied 4-4 at Giants Stadium, with Landon Donovan tying the game in stoppage time … The following year, the two teams combined for 10 goals in a 5-5 draw at Spartan Stadium on May 8 … The two teams met in the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time on Oct. 30, 2010, at Buck Shaw Stadium in the first leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, as the Red Bulls won 1-0 on a goal by Joel Lindpere … They faced off again on Nov. 4, 2010, and the Earthquakes defeated top-seeded New York at Red Bull Arena, 3-1, with Chris Wondolowski’s 81st-minute goal ensuring the Quakes continued their improbable postseason run that year by advancing 3-2 on aggregate to the Eastern Conference Championship … Most recently, the Red Bulls took a 3-0 home decision last April 16, with the teams playing to an entertaining 2-2 draw at Stanford Stadium on July 2 in front of 41,028 spectators, the largest single-game crowd in club history at the time … With the league’s unbalanced schedule in 2012, the two sides played just once, a 2-2 draw at Red Bull Arena on April 14 … The Quakes won in dramatic fashion in their lone meeting of 2013, a 2-1 result after San Jose fell behind 1-0. Chris Wondolowski scored the game-winner from the penalty spot in stoppage time … San Jose tied the Red Bulls 1-1 in their meeting on July 19, 2014 at Red Bull Arena …The Earthquakes lost to the Red Bulls 2-0 in their only meeting of 2015 on April 17 at Red Bull Arena … In 2016, the Quakes flipped the result with a 2-0 win at Avaya Stadium thanks to goals from Fatai Alashe and Chris Wondolowski, whose goal leveled him with Ante Razov for the fourth most career goals in MLS history (114).

Former Quakes defender and current head coach Chris Leitch had two stints in New York, one from 2003-05, and another from 2007-08 … Earthquakes midfielder Simon Dawkins and Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips were both born in England … Dawkins and Red Bulls defender Kemar Lawrence have both played for the Jamaican National Team … Quakes defender Andres Imperiale and Red Bulls midfielder/forward Gonzalo Veron are both Argentinian … San Jose midfielder Jackson Yueill (2015-16) and Red Bulls midfielder Sal Zizzo (2005-06) both played at UCLA … Red Bulls midfielders Sacha Kljestan and Sal Zizzo and goalkeeper Luis Robles, along with Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski and goalkeeper David Bingham, have all played for the U.S. National Team … San Jose midfielder Anibal Godoy and New York defender Michael Murillo are both from Panama City, Panama, and have played for their national team … Quakes midfielder Darwin Ceren and Red Bulls defender Aurelien Collin played together at Orlando City SC during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

The San Jose Earthquakes earned a point in a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders FC at Avaya Stadium. After Nicolas Lodeiro scored in the 84th minute to give Seattle the lead, Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski scored his second goal of the season to equalize the match in the waning moments.


History of the Quakes – Seattle Sounders FC Rivalry

The two teams first met in regular season play in 2009 when the Sounders joined MLS … San Jose won all three meetings in the 2012 regular season, including two wins at CenturyLink Field in Seattle … Chris Wondolowski scored the winner in a 1-0 win on March 31 in Seattle on a penalty kick, following a foul by Marc Burch on Steven Lenhart … Lenhart then scored a dramatic game-winner on Aug. 11 at Buck Shaw Stadium, netting a stoppage time goal following a late equalizer by Sounders FC … San Jose then took a 2-1 win on Sept. 22 at CenturyLink Field with goals from Simon Dawkins and Chris Wondolowski … Seattle did win 1-0 over San Jose in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match at Kezar Stadium. For The Record

The last time these two sides met, Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski scored his 114th career goal, bringing him level with Ante Razov for fourth-most goals all-time in MLS history. This time around, Wondolowski is just two goals away from an eighth consecutive season with 10 or more goals, which would extend the MLS record he set last season.


Potential Preview

Wednesday's match could serve as a preview to a potential U.S. Open Cup final, as both the Quakes and Red Bulls advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament last week. If both advance to the final, the Red Bulls would host the Quakes again.


Clicking Offense

Chris Wondolowski has scored four goals in his last three matches, while Danny Hoesen has three in his last five appearances, both of them across all competitions. The Quakes’ 3-2 win over the Galaxy in the U.S. Open Cup last week marked the fifth consecutive multi-goal goal game for the Quakes across all competitions, including three in MLS.


Duty Calls

Earthquakes midfielders Anibal Godoy and Darwin Ceren, as well as forward Marco Ureña, will continue to be absent from the squad as all three advanced to the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup with their respective national teams.


Possible Debut

The Earthquakes new Designated Player, Valeri “Vako” Qazaishvili, travelled with the club to New York and could make his MLS debut against the Red Bulls on Wednesday.


RENO 1868 FC UPDATE

Reno 1868 FC extended their good form in USL play with a 1-1 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Saturday night, which moved them to fourth in the Western Conference.


The Quakes’ affiliate will return to action on Sunday, July 23, to face Portland Timbers 2 at Greater Nevada Field.


BURLINGAME DRAGONS FC UPDATE

Burlingame Dragons FC ended their Premier Development League season with a 1-0 against rivals San Francisco City FC. Forward Matthew Wiesenfarth finished as the league’s co-top scorer with 13 goals.
