March 21, 1997 – Acquired forward Ronald Cerritos as MLS allocated player
The Earthquakes acquired forward Ronald Cerritos as an MLS allocated player on March 21, 1997. The El Salvador native scored in his MLS debut against the LA Galaxy and registered an additional 11 goals during his first season for San Jose, earning him MLS Best XI honors and a place in the 1997 MLS West All-Star team. Cerritos was the Quakes’ leading scorer from 1997 to 1999, and in 2001, helped the Earthquakes win their first MLS Cup after finishing the season as the club’s top scorer and being selected to the West All-Star team. The forward left the Earthquakes after the 2001 season, but returned in 2005 and helped San Jose win the Supporters’ Shield. He was inducted in the Earthquakes Hall of Fame on Sept. 29, 2010.
March 22, 2015 – Defeated Chicago Fire 2-1 in first-ever match at Avaya Stadium
The Earthquakes defeated the Chicago Fire 2-1 in their inaugural match at Avaya Stadium. Rookie midfielder Fatai Alashe opened the scoring with the Quakes’ first-ever goal in their new stadium, while defender Ty Harden scored the eventual winner for the home side.
