After sustaining a minor foot injury in training, Quakes captain & United States Men's National Team forward Chris Wondolowski was not able to participate in this week's World Cup Qualifiers, notably Friday's clash with arch rivals Mexico. Looking for a player's perspective on one of the USMNT's most anticipated matches of 2016, ESPN FC looked no further than Wondo. He joined The Boot Room Wednesday to give his take on the game, MLS Cup Playoffs & more.
"With Mexico, they're able to stretch you and connect their passes. They're very dangerous. If you stay organized, compact and attack with some speed we'll be able to get a couple goals."
Adamant about having the correct pieces in place to stay organized and attack with speed, Wondo laid out what he saw as the biggest strengths of this current collection of American talent.
"Our attitude and our willingness to compete and battle. If you look across our midfield you have great generals like Michael Bradley & Jermaine Jones. You also have a bit of a spark from guys like Christian Pulisic, Bobby Wood and Jozy Altidore. These are some great attacking options."
Host Bernardo Osuna then puts Wondo on the hot seat, asking him to call a winner.
"USA. I think we're going to stay organized, we're going to be able to attack with speed, especially on the counterattack, and I think we're going to get 2 [goals]."
When asked if he was hinting at the famed 'Dos a Cero' scoreline that has been so kind to the USMNT in Columbus, he wasn't going to go that far, predicting a 2-1 USA win.
Wondo finishes off the interview discussing MLS Cup playoffs & his pick for eventual champion, whether MLS is ready for promotion and relegation and a free market system, and how the Quakes will look to improve this offseason.
