OAKLAND, Calif. - San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Shea Salinas was on hand to present a check for $1,500 to Coliseum College Prep in Oakland on Monday as part of the Wells Fargo Goals for Education Program.
Coliseum College Prep is in one of the most crime-ridden areas of East Oakland. The school will use the funds to enhance soccer opportunities by purchasing uniforms, equipment and paying fees for their kids to play in competitive leagues.
The entire school attended the check presentation, which included a speech by Salinas as well as a representative from Wells Fargo. Salinas spoke to the kids about the impact soccer has had on his life and his journey from the youth ranks to Major League Soccer.
Wells Fargo donates $250 for each goal the Earthquakes score to the Wells Fargo Goals for Education program. At the end of each season, Wells Fargo and the Earthquakes select programs in need to receive funds. San Jose scored 72 goals in 2012 for a total of $18,000, which will be dispersed to 42 different schools and local youth services.
