The San Jose Earthquakes weren’t playing on Thursday night, but that didn’t stop the organization from making an impact on the Avaya Stadium pitch.
The Earthquakes’ home venue hosted a men’s college soccer match between the University of California and Sacramento State. The two teams fired home eight goals, with two goals and an assist coming by way of Quakes Academy products.
Cal prevailed 6-2 in the high-scoring contest. Former Quakes Academy midfielder Alonzo Del Mundo tallied the Golden Bears’ first goal just five minutes into the match. Following a second goal by Cal, the Sac State Hornets were able to cut the deficit in half when Dominic Scotti, also of the Quakes Academy, converted a penalty kick.
Less than five minutes later, the Golden Bears’ extended their lead when left back Christopher Grey – another former member of the Quakes Academy – assisted Shinya Kadono. Kadono would go on to tally four goals, including the game-winner, and an assist in his standout performance.
Academy alum Drake Callender made a season-high six saves in the win, while Sam Ebstein started and Kaleo Fernandez appeared of the bench. Freshman defender Jean-Julien Foe Nuphaus was not available for selection due to his recent call-up to the U.S. U-19 National Team.
Defender Abraham Rosales started for Sacramento State, representing the Earthquakes for the away side along with Scotti.
