SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Wednesday night with a 2-0 win against the San Francisco Deltas at Avaya Stadium. Less than four minutes into his professional debut, Earthquakes’ No. 6 overall 2017 SuperDraft selection Jackson Yueill gave the Quakes an early lead. Two minutes later, midfielder Cordell Cato doubled the score to secure the victory.
The opponent and location of the Quakes’ next U.S. Open Cup match will be determined in a draw Thursday, June 15 at 8 a.m. PT and will be streamed on U.S. Soccer's Facebook page.
The Earthquakes return to MLS action on Saturday, June 17 against Sporting Kansas City at Avaya Stadium. The match kicks off at 5:45 p.m. PT and will air live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

On the match:
“I thought we relaxed at 2-0. The first 10-15 minutes, I thought we were definitely pushing forward, putting them under pressure and passing the ball well and breaking well. I think at 2-0 we took our foot off the pedal and they kind of stepped up their game up a little because they were behind 2-0, so it combined with each other. They got some chances and we were fouling too close to goal, which wasn’t a great idea. It kept giving them an opportunity to get some guys in front of our box, but I thought Andrew Tarbell made some real good saves for us and he commanded his box well too.”
On Jackson Yueill’s debut performance:
“Thought he had a good game, good pass on the ball; he is a smart player. I think going to Reno and playing with them, the handful of times he has done it this year, has definitely benefited him. These are good games for him and someone like [goalkeeper] Andrew Tarbell to show that their work in practice is paying off and I think he did that tonight.”

On Jackson Yueill’s debut:
“To be honest, with that goal for young guys, veteran guys or any guy, that’s not an easy finish. He struck it well. His technique is pretty special. He’s a great player. It didn’t surprise me that it hit the back of the net because he’s a special player. I thought he did very well. He commanded the midfield. It was a great goal and beautifully taken, but I thought he controlled the midfield. I was really happy to see that, and hopefully he continues to grow because he’s doing well in practice as well.”
On Andrew Tarbell’s first appearance of 2017:
“I thought he was outstanding. He’s a great goalkeeper. I can’t say I’m surprised by it because he has shown it in practice, but again it’s good to see it in games. He commanded the box well and made a couple of great saves that kept the momentum on our side.”

On scoring in his first professional game:
“Obviously it was a great start for the entire team. It was very important for us to go out and score. The free kick from Danny (Hoesen) hit off the wall and came right to me. I just saw the perfect opportunity. I couldn’t be happier in that moment. I’m just happy for that.”
On how he played after the goal:
“That goal made me more anxious to keep going. The next goal came and I was happy about that. After that we kept the ball and were able to stay composed. We didn’t risk too much after going up 2-0, which is really good from us. It was a good performance scoring two goals early.”

“The higher you go in levels, consistency is the most important. Everyone out here is a good athlete. It’s who can do it every minute, every time and every day. For me trying to be consistent has been the biggest thing.”
