Sjearthquakes.com: Cuéntanos sobre tu trayectoria. ¿De dónde vienes y dónde has trabajado?
Omar Zarif: “Comencé jugando al fútbol de una manera muy particular para lo que es Argentina porque en Argentina se comienza desde las fuerzas básicas o las divisiones inferiores, como se los llaman, a los nueve, diez años y se va avanzando en el club. Yo no hice todo este proceso de inferiores. Lo hice en la escuela como generalmente se hace aquí. De grande a los 19 años, pude empezar a jugar al fútbol en un club que fue el club Sportivo Dock Sud, fue quien que me dio la posibilidad de iniciar como profesional, pero como te digo ya de grande a los 19 años. Fue un poquito raro comenzar a esa edad, pero por suerte me fue muy bien allí en Dock Sud. En el club estuve cuatro años y luego pasé por varios clubes también de la categoría de ascenso de Argentina hasta pude cumplir el sueño de jugar en primera división con el club Nueva Chicago que ascendimos a La Primera y allí pude jugar varios años en La Primera.”
SJEQ: Tell us about your career path. Where are you from and where have you worked?
OZ: “I started playing soccer in a different way than most professionals in Argentina. In Argentina, you start with the academies when you are 9 or 10 years old and continue with the club. I didn’t join an academy. Instead, I played at my school like people generally do here. When I was 19, I started playing soccer with a club called Sportivo Dock Sud. They gave me the opportunity to play professionally, but I was already a grownup. It was a bit unusual to start at that age, but luckily it went well for me at Dock Sud. I was there for four years and afterwards I went to a few clubs in the second division in Argentina until I was able to make my dream of playing in the first division come true with Nueva Chicago. We earned promotion to the first division and from there I played in the top flight for many years.”
SJEQ: ¿Cómo conociste a Matías?
OZ: “Jugaba en Banfield y el entrenador que estaba salió y llegó Matías. Terminamos el torneo y Matías se inició la nueva posición en la pretemporada y allí empecé a conocerlo bien. Hicimos un año muy lindo. Ascendimos con el club Banfield a la primera división y salimos campeones. A partir de allí, Matías vio algo en mí y empezó a hablarme para que forme parte de su equipo. Así que seis meses después de haber logrado ser campeones, Matías me dio la posibilidad y me preguntó si estoy listo para ser de su equipo. Después de una decisión difícil, dejar de ser jugador, tomé la decisión de ser parte de su cuerpo técnico luego de hablarlo también con mi familia. La verdad que estoy muy contento. Allí conocí a Matías y a partir de ese año comencé en Banfield a ser parte de su cuerpo técnico.”
“Estuvimos en Banfield esos seis meses. Tuve que dirigir a mis excompañeros. Aprendí mucho y después de allí salimos de Banfield. A los dos meses, iniciamos en Chivas. Por suerte estuve todo el proceso de Chivas al lado de Matías y al lado de un muy lindo cuerpo técnico y el lindo grupo que tuvimos.”
SJEQ: How did you meet Matias?
OZ: “I was playing at Banfield and the head coach that was there left so Matias came. We finished the season and Matias started in the preseason which is when I started to get to know him. We had really good year. We were the champions and were promoted to the first division. From there, Matias saw something in me and started to talk with me about joining the coaching staff. Six months after winning the championship, Matias asked me if I was ready to join the coaches. It was a tough decision to stop playing, but I decided to join the technical staff after talking with my family. I am really happy I made the switch. That is where I met Matias and I have been part of his technical staff since that year at Banfield.”
“I was at Banfield for those six months. I had to coach my former teammates. I learned a lot and after that we left Banfield. Two months later we started at Chivas. I am fortunate to have been at Matias’ side the whole time at Chivas and have been part of a great technical staff and a great group.”
SJEQ: ¿Por qué tomaste la decisión de venir a San Jose?
OZ: “Tomé la decisión de venir a San Jose porque fue la decisión que Matías eligió, pensándolo muy bien y teniendo en cuenta el amor que le brindaban aquí. Tomé la decisión de venir a San Jose porque en el primer momento que Matías me pidió que me retire del fútbol, él me pidió que estemos juntos durante un largo tiempo de quince o más años. Porque soy parte de su grupo, porque pienso de la misma forma y me considero que tengo muy parecidos valores de vida, voy a estar a su lado. Cuando él me preguntó si estaba decidido venir a San Jose, le dije que sí porque me gusta el desafío de conocer a una nueva cultura. Ya nos tocó en México. Me parece que sea una linda posibilidad de poder levantar a un club que tiene una linda historia y que hoy no lo está pasando bien. También fue un a decisión familiar. Tengo dos hijas y una esposa que están muy ilusionadas de venir a vivir en este país y esta linda ciudad.”
SJEQ: Why did you decide to come to San Jose?
OZ: “I made the decision to come to San Jose because that was the decision that Matias made. He made the decision after thinking about it a lot and taking into consideration the love that they have here. I made the decision to come here because from the moment that I retired from soccer, Matias asked me to work with him for a long time - 15 years or more. I am part of his group and because we think the same way and I believe we have same values, I am going to be at his side. When he asked me if I had decided to come to San Jose, I said yes because I like the challenge of learning a new culture like we did in Mexico. To me, it seemed like a good opportunity to help a club that has strong history but is struggling at the moment. It was also a family decision. I have two daughters and a wife that are very excited to come live here in this country and beautiful city.”
SJEQ: ¿En qué manera puedes ayudar al equipo?
OZ: “Somos un grupo que le damos algo al equipo. En lo que respecto a mí y lo que me pide Matías, estaré a su lado para analizar a los rivales, analizar a nuestro equipo cada vez que juega y estar en todos los detalles en cada entrenamiento. A mí me gusta mucho armar los ejercicios que planteamos en los entrenamientos en las pretemporadas, estar cerca de los jugadores para que puedan entender y poder nosotros mostrarles nuestra experiencia que hemos tenido como jugadores así que espero que podamos hacerlo bien. Espero poder transmitirle mi experiencia como jugador y más que nada, espero que ellos puedan conocerme como persona.”
SJEQ: What do you bring to the team?
OZ: “We are a group that will give something to the team. In respect to my role and what Matias wants from me, I will be at his side analyzing other teams and our team after each game that we play, and I will have all the details from each training session. I really like to put together the exercises that we do in preseason. I like to be close to the players so that they can understand, and we can show them the experience we have as players, so I hope we can do that well. I hope to pass on my experience as a player to them and more than anything, I hope they can get to know me as a person.”
SJEQ: ¿Qué conoces de la MLS? ¿Cuál era tu impresión de la liga antes de unirte a los Quakes?
OZ: “La impresión que tengo de la liga es muy buena, por eso tomé la decisión de venir a la MLS porque es una liga que está creciendo muchísimo año a año. Es una liga que por allí muchos subestiman, pero nosotros les damos la mayor importancia. Es una liga que me gusta. Hemos jugado en la Concachampions que ganamos con Chivas, y los equipos son muy muy difíciles, muy duros y tienen grandes jugadores y grandes estrellas. Sé que es una liga muy organizada, y eso me gusta mucho. Me gusta mucho este desafío.”
SJEQ: What was your impression about MLS before joining San Jose?
OZ: “I have a good impression of the league, which is why I decided to come to MLS because it is a league that is growing year after year. It is a league that a lot of people underestimate, but we give it the upmost importance. It is a league that I like. We won the Concacaf Champions League with Chivas, and the teams were really, really difficult, really tough, and had big players and stars. I know it is a really organized league, which I like a lot. I really like this challenge.”
SJEQ: ¿Por qué este grupo es tan especial?
OZ: “Porque nos fuimos juntando con los tiempos de dios. ¿Por qué digo eso? Porque cada uno se juntó en una etapa diferente y porque tenemos valores de vida parecidos y lindas familias detrás de nosotros que también son amigas y se quieren mucho. Realmente siento que somos una linda familia. Lo hemos corroborado en México que estamos a 7,000 ó 8,000 kilómetros de distancia de nuestra familia en Argentina y para poder pasarla bien y estar felices, tuvimos que formar nuestra familia también en México así que eso no va a ser la excepción. También vamos a hacer lo aquí en los Estados Unidos.”
SJEQ: Why is this group so special?
OZ: “We have been together with God’s time. Why do I say this? Because each one of us got together at a different point in time and we have similar values. Our families also get along well and care for each other a lot. I really feel that we are beautiful family. We formed it in Mexico when we were 7,000 or 8,000 kilometers away from our families in Argentina, and in order to be happy and content there, we had to make our own family. We are going to do the same here the U.S.”
