sjearthquakes.com: Cuéntanos sobre tu trayectoria. ¿De dónde vienes y dónde has trabajado?
Benjamín Galindo: “Mi nombre el Benjamín Galindo Marentes y soy el auxiliar técnico de Matías Almeyda. Como futbolista profesional jugué por 22 años hasta los 42 años. Inicié en el equipo Tampico en la temporada 1979/1980 y duré siete años. Posteriormente me fui a jugar a Chivas, duré ocho años. De allí me cambio yo a Santos de Torreón y duro tres años. Luego voy a Cruz Azul por dos años y a Pachuca por medio año. Regreso a Chivas y juego año y medio y me retiro. Ésa es mi carrera como futbolista profesional. De director técnico he dirigido dos veces a Chivas, dos veces a Santos. Dirigí al Atlas y también a Cruz Azul.”
SJEQ: Tell us about your career path. Where are you from and where have you worked?
BG: “My name is Benajmin Galindo Marentes and I am Matias Almedya’s assistant coach. I played professional soccer for 22 years until I was 42 years old. I started with Tampico in the 1979-80 season and I stayed with them for seven years. Afterwards, I went to play with Chivas and stayed eight years. From there I went to Santos de Torreón and played three years. Later, I went to Cruz Azul for two years and to Pachuca for half a year. I returned to Chivas for another year and a half and then I retired. That is my career as a professional soccer player. As a head coach, I’ve led Chivas twice and Santos twice. I also coached Atlas and Cruz Azul.”
SJEQ: ¿Cómo conociste a Matías?
BG: “A Matías más de una vez jugamos en contra. Él es más joven que yo. Dirigió a Chivas entonces allí empezamos a vernos, empezamos a frecuentarnos. Hemos hecho una bonita amistad. Más allá de coincidimos en muchas cosas en la vida y en el fútbol, su filosofía y su forma de ver, es algo parecido. Hemos coincidido en muchas cosas y al final él me invitó hace algún tiempo trabajar con él y le dije que sí.”
SJEQ: How did you meet Matias?
BG: “I played against Matias on more than one occasion. He is younger than I am. He coached Chivas and that is where we started to see and visit each other. We became good friends and beyond that, we agree on many things in soccer and in life. His philosophy and his way of looking at the game is similar. We agree on many things and eventually he asked me if I want to work with him, and I said yes.”
SJEQ: ¿Por qué tomaste la decisión de venir a San Jose?
BG: “Porque vi que es un proyecto muy serio. Es un equipo que tiene grandes cosas por hacer. Más allá que como quedó el torneo pasado, se ve por los dueños y los directivos que es un equipo serio. Es un equipo para trabajar al gusto para trabajarlo y para lograr cosas. Entonces siempre me llamó la atención más últimamente de venir acá y de poder trabajar acá en la MLS. Jugamos en contra nada más, pero siempre tenía ese gusto que algún día iba a estar yo acá trabajando.”
SJEQ: Why did you decide to come to San Jose?
BG: “Because I see this as a serious project. It is a team with big things to achieve. Beyond what happened last season, you can see from the owners and the executives that this is a serious team. It is a team where you work because you enjoy it and to achieve things here. It has always caught my attention, and more so recently, to come and work here in MLS. We have always played against teams from MLS, but I have always had this desire to one day come here and work.”
SJEQ: ¿En qué manera puedes ayudar al equipo?
BG: “Principalmente, la función que yo pueda ayudarle a Matías, yo siempre le digo que soy 24 horas para él. Cuando eres ayudante, tienes que estar en todos los aspectos. Prácticamente hacemos de todo. En lo que el me comente, yo con mucho gusto lo hago. Yo estoy en la mejor disposición. Ya fui técnico y realmente tienes todo el conocimiento.”
SJEQ: What do you bring to the team?
BG: “Fundamentally, in any way that I can help Matias. I have always said that I am available 24 hours to help him. When you are the assistant coach, you need to be involved in all the aspects. But yes, we can practically do everything. I will do whatever he asks me to do. I have great aptitude. I was already a head coach and have a lot of knowledge.”
SJEQ: ¿Qué conoces de la MLS? ¿Cuál era tu impresión de la liga antes de unirte a los Quakes?
BG: “Año con año va mejorando. Sobre todo, son equipos que en los estadios ya se ve la gente. La gente llama más la atención. Juegan mucho mejor. Ya han traído mejores futbolistas y sobre todo, la gente está volviendo muy apasionada al fútbol. Desde los niños, desde los jóvenes, ya ves mucho fútbol por todos lados de la ciudad en todas las ciudades realmente. Ha crecido muchísimo y por eso te llama más la atención.”
SJEQ: What was your impression of MLS before joining San Jose?
BG: “It is getting better each year. There are people in the stadiums which stands out. The teams play a lot better and have attracted better soccer players. Above all, people are getting very passionate about soccer. From the kids, the youngsters, you see a lot of soccer in all parts of the city and in all the cities. It really has grown a lot and for this reason, it catches your attention.”
SJEQ: ¿Por qué este grupo es tan especial?
BG: “Soy nuevo y unas de las cosas que he convivido mucho con ellos fuera del fútbol. Realmente, no los conozco como profesionales, pero como yo estuve en Chivas y todo lo que hablan de este cuerpo técnico de Matías Almeyda es sensacional. Es muy bueno. Es como una familia para ellos. Los ves como los comportan en familia, con sus hijos, con ellos mismos. Siempre están arropándose, siempre están ayudándose, en todos los sentidos. A mí eso me llama mucho la atención. A mí cuando me invita Matías, yo no lo dudo. Al contrario, te facilitan las cosas ellos.”
SJEQ: Why is this group so special?
BG: “I am new to the group, but I have spent time with them outside of soccer. To be honest, I do not know them as professionals, but as I was at Chivas, everything that people said about Matias Almeyda’s technical staff was sensational. It is really good. They are like a family. You can see how they act with their families, with their children, with each other. They are always around each other, always helping each other in every way. This really caught my attention. When Matias asked me to join his group, I didn’t hesitate. On the contrary, they make it easy.”
