The Quakes return home to Avaya Stadium Saturday night not only to induct Quakes great Joe Cannon into the club’s Hall of Fame, but to right the ship against one of their biggest Western Conferences foes, Seattle Sounders FC. Ahead of their highly anticipated bout in front of the San Jose faithful, we take a look at a few storylines ahead of this weekend’s match against the men in Rave Green.
Panamanian Teammates Clash at Avaya Stadium
Anibal Godoy and Roman Torres, arguably the most decorated Panamanian Team national team players, will meet once again for their respective MLS clubs Saturday night. Both players joined MLS in the summer of 2015, with Torres signing with Seattle on Aug. 12 and Godoy signing with San Jose on Aug. 6. After two seasons in America, both have enjoyed success in their careers. In 2016, Torres converted the final penalty kick to secure Sounders FC their first ever MLS Cup crown, while Godoy has earned a reputation as one of the most efficient midfielders the league has to offer.
United States National Team Players Reunite at Avaya Stadium
It seems like yesterday that the United States capped off a dominating 6-0 win against Honduras in last month’s crucial FIFA World Cup Qualifier at Avaya Stadium. Fortunate for us, we get to see USMNT players Clint Dempsey, Chris Wondolowski and David Bingham grace the field for the second time in less than a month. Quakes fans will hope that Dempsey doesn’t replicate his last performance in San Jose after tallying an impressive hat-trick against the Hondurans.
Home Success Against Seattle
How’s this for a stat: Seattle hasn’t won a game in San Jose in nearly seven years. With history in favor of the Quakes heading into Saturday’s match, San Jose will look to improve on the club’s 7-10-4 all-time record against their NASL rivals.
