SAN JOSE (October 22, 2018) - San Jose Earthquakes Academy midfielder Sophie Jones has been named to the United States U-17 Women’s National Team’s 21-player roster for the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.
Jones has been a regular for the U-17s in 2018, having recently competed in the U-17 Women’s CONCACAF Championship, the Copa Provincia de Buenos Aires tournament and the U-17 Women’s Invitational in Bradenton, Fla.
Jones led the U-17s to a first-place finish in the CONCACAF Championship, which acts as the World Cup qualifiers for the CONCACAF region. In the tournament, Jones started four of five matches, secured two clean sheets and scored her first international goal.
The U.S. have been drawn into Group C of the U-17 Women’s World Cup, which features Cameroon, South Korea and Germany. Jones and the U.S. will begin World Cup group play against Cameroon on Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. PT, followed by South Korea on Nov.17 at 11 a.m. PT and Germany on Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. PT. All of the U.S.’ matches will be broadcast on Fox Sports 2.
Jones currently plays for the Earthquakes U-19 Girls’ Academy and has committed to play Division I NCAA soccer at Duke University. In the 2017-18 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season, Jones led the U-17 Girls’ Academy to a 24-6-1 record, finishing second in the Western Conference with 73 points. The team also reached the semifinal of the Girls' U-17 Academy Championships, and eventually finished third in the nation.
Jones was named to the Western Conference U-17 Best XI, and was also named the Western Conference U-17 Player of the Year at the end of the USSDA 2017-18 season. She made 19 starts and scored four goals during the Academy season, while spending extensive time with the U-17 U.S. WNT.
