Sophie Jones - USA Goal Celebration

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes Girls’ Academy midfielder Sophie Jones and forward Mia Fontana have been called up by U-17 U.S. WNT head coach Mark Carr for camp in California and two games in South Korea.

The camp and friendly matches come in preparation for the 2018 U-17 Women's World Cup, which will take place in Uruguay in November. Jones is one of 13 players on the 24-player roster that helped the USA qualify for the World Cup by winning the 2018 Concacaf U-17 Women’s Championship in June.

The U.S. will play South Korea, which also qualified for the World Cup, on Aug. 18 and Aug. 21.

Fontana and Jones both enjoyed a successful 2017-18 season with the Quakes Girls’ U-17 team, finishing in second-place in the Western Conference with 73 points and an 24-6-1 record. The team also reached the semifinal of the Girls' U-17 Academy Championships, and eventually finished in third place.

Following the season, both Jones and Fontana were named to Western Conference U-17 Best XI, and Jones was also named the Western Conference U-17 Player of the Year. She made 19 starts and scored four goals during the Academy season, while spending extensive time with the U-17 U.S. WNT. Fontana showed her knack for scoring goals, scoring 31 goals in 31 starts for the Quakes.
