Earthquakes Academy player Sophie Jones returns home after the Unites States U-17 Women’s team was knocked out of the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay. The U.S. started off by defeating Cameroon 3-0, with two goals from Sunshine Fontes and one goal from Mia Fishel. The second match up was between the U.S. and Korea DPR, who defeated the U.S. team 3-0.
The final match took place between the U.S. and Germany, who both needed a win in order to qualify for the quarterfinals. Germany defeated the U.S. team 4-0, securing the first place position in Group C and advancing to the quarterfinals along with second-place Korea DPR.
Although Jones and the team did not end up advancing further in the competition, the Menlo Park native did accomplish a major achievement in being named the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Player of the Year. This is in addition to being named Development Academy’s Player of the Year for the U-17 Western Conference this season. Jones has continued to garner much deserved attention for her skill, most recently from former player Megan McCormick who showed her support through a tweet.
