INDIO, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Portland Timbers 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, in their third and final preseason game at the 2024 Coachella Valley Invitational. A second-half penalty goal from forward Benji Kikanović sealed the victory for the Quakes.
The Quakes controlled the majority of possession and created the most chances throughout a scoreless first half. The second half started with a heavily rotated lineup. San Jose found the breakthrough goal in the 72nd minute, when Kikanović scored from the penalty spot after being brought down inside the box.Â
The Quakes will finish their preseason training camp with a closed-door friendly against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, Feb. 17. The team will return to San Jose to prepare for the regular season opener on Feb. 24 against FC Dallas.
