SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes have enlisted the help of UK-based SIS Pitches to equip Earthquakes Stadium with a new SISGrass hybrid field, one of the most technologically advanced sports surfaces in the world. The field will be installed and maintained by Colony Landscape & Maintenance, Inc., which has proudly served the Bay Area for more than 25 years.
SISGrass is 95% natural grass and 5% artificial fiber, designed to increase stability, reduce surface damage and improve recovery time between events. SISGrass also fares better in poor weather conditions such as heavy rain and heat waves.
The natural grass will be a mixture of Kentucky bluegrass and ryegrass. Repairs and updates are also being made to the field’s underlying drainage network and sand base.
“We were impressed by previous installs of SISGrass around the world and how it stood up to increased levels of wear and tear,” said Earthquakes Chief Operating Officer Jared Shawlee. “Our goal is to provide our team with one of the premier playing surfaces in the United States.”
The innovative technology is used by renowned clubs all over the world, including the home stadiums of FC Barcelona (Camp Nou) and Inter Milan/AC Milan (San Siro), as well as the training centers of Chelsea FC, AS Roma, and England National Teams, among many others.
SISGrass was installed at six stadiums in Russia ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, including Luzhniki Stadium, host venue for the Final. The pitch at Luzhniki Stadium endured more than 80 hours of use over five weeks leading up to and including the Final. It marked the first time in history that the men’s World Cup Final was played on anything other than 100% natural grass.
SISGrass has also been utilized by sports teams in North America, including the Green Bay Packers’ Lambeau Field and BMO Field, the dual-purpose home of Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC and Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts.
