Earthquakes goalkeeper Matt Bersano recently earned Reno 1868 FC’s Save of the Year.
As the expansion side’s primary goalkeeper, Bersano was one of three to serve the club between the goal posts during the season, along with Andrew Tarbell and Russell Klabough. He allowed 33 goals in 28 games (1.18 GAA) and made 73 saves in 2017.
None of them, however, were better than his diving save to keep Phoenix Rising FC off the board on May 6. Reno would go on to win 4-0, earning their first win and shutout in the process. 1868 FC had started the season 0-4-3 and this save helped kick-start their winning ways.
The save was nominated for USL Save of the Week, finishing second in the fan vote.
Bersano’s contract option for 2018 was exercised by the Quakes on Monday. Whether he spends most the season in San Jose or back with Reno remains to be seen.
