The San Jose Earthquakes sent a couple familiar faces to Frisco, Texas to compete in the Generation adidas Cup, the premier competition for MLS Academies at the U-17 level.
Midfielder Gilbert Fuentes and defender Jacob Akanyirige, a pair of 16-year-olds, are competing with the Quakes Academy at the prestigious tournament. Both were playing at the U-19 level before signing First Team contracts in the offseason.
Competing in Group C of the Premier Division, the duo helped San Jose get off to a fast start on Friday. Fuentes tallied the game’s lone goal while the Akanyirige-led defense pitched a shutout against the Chicago Fire. The Quakes are currently in first place, with the New York Red Bulls and Mexico’s Tigres playing their first match tomorrow.
The Earthquakes will take on the Red Bulls on Sunday, March 25 at 5:30 p.m. PT before facing off against Tigres on Tuesday, March 27 at 7 a.m. PT. Neither game will be streamed, but follow the @QuakesAcademy on Twitter for live updates.
