Florian Jungwirth - San Jose Earthquakes - 2019 - Re-Signing

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has signed defender Florian Jungwirth to a new multi-year contract.

Jungwirth was selected as the club’s Defensive Player of the Year in two of his three seasons to date with San Jose (2017, 2019). He is just the second Earthquakes field player to win the award more than once (Jeff Agoos; 2001, 2003).

“Florian has been an integral part of our defense for the past three seasons,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. “His experience and ability to direct our defensive line have proved invaluable to the team and we’re excited he’ll continue to fight for us in the coming years.”

Jungwirth, 30, joined the Earthquakes ahead of the 2017 MLS season following an extensive career in Germany. He has since made 87 starts in 91 total appearances, tallying five goals and nine assists.

Jungwirth led San Jose to a 13-12-5 record across his 30 starts in 2019, with the Quakes dropping each of the four matches he did not feature. He ultimately finished with a career-high 2,671 minutes this season and ranked second in Major League Soccer with 2.2 interceptions per game.

The native of Grafelfing, Germany has suffered more fouls (101) than he has committed (93) as a member of the Earthquakes and hasn’t received a single suspension due to ejection or yellow card accumulation.
