SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes have announced the full coaching staff for Earthquakes II ahead of the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season. Head coach Dan DeGeer will be supported by assistant coach Jordan Stewart and goalkeeper coach Jeremy Clark.
“Earthquakes II is an important part of our club and something we take pride in,” said Earthquakes General Manager Chris Leitch. “We feel really good about the staff we have in place and their respective experiences, both inside and outside of the Quakes organization. The coaches are entrusted to help move young players along our development pathway to the first team and we’re confident in this group’s ability to do that.”
DeGeer most recently served as interim head coach of Earthquakes II following Alex Covelo’s jump to the first team in April 2022. DeGeer led Quakes II to an 11-6-4 record during his 21 matches at the helm, and the team finished with the sixth-best record of all 21 clubs. A coach in the Quakes Academy since 2017, DeGeer began the 2022 season as head coach of the U17s before also becoming interim head coach of Quakes II. During his time with the Quakes Academy, DeGeer helped develop many future homegrowns, including Cruz Medina, Emi Ochoa, and Niko Tsakiris.
Prior to joining the Quakes organization, DeGeer has also held coaching or director roles for the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State, Star Academy, and Burlingame Soccer Club, among others. He has also served as an assistant coach for the United States U17 National Team.
A native of Tigard, Oregon, DeGeer played collegiately at the University of San Francisco, where he won the 2004 and 2005 West Coast Conference Championship and received three straight NCAA bids. In his final season at USF, he was selected First Team All-WCC and drafted by the LA Galaxy. He also played for the U.S. National Futsal Team in 2008.
DeGeer holds an Elite Formation Coaching License, offered through MLS and the French Football Federation, a USSF National A-Youth License, and completed courses through the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and ACF Fiorentina. He also possesses a master’s degree in kinesiology from Fresno Pacific University.
Stewart has served as an assistant coach in the Quakes Academy since Aug. 2022. Prior to joining the coaching ranks, he made more than 400 professional appearances in England and the United States, including 69 appearances in the English Premier League and 71 MLS appearances for San Jose between 2013-16.
During his lengthy playing career in his native England, Stewart competed in the Premier League with both Leicester City and Watford and represented the England National Team at the U21 level. He then signed with the Earthquakes in the summer of 2013 before finishing his career with Phoenix Rising FC of the USL Championship.
Clark joins Earthquakes II from Albion SC, a San Diego-based team that competes in the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA), where he has served as head goalkeeper coach since Feb. 2022. Prior to Albion SC, Clark was goalkeeper coach for USL Championship side Oakland Roots SC for one year and helped the team reach the Western Conference semifinals.
Clark’s lengthy coaching resume also includes roles with UC San Diego, Minnesota United FC, Santa Barbara Soccer Club, UC Santa Barbara, the University of Evansville, Detroit City FC, and Michigan State University. He holds a USSF National A-Senior Coaching License.
