SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes today announced that the club has extended the loan for midfielder Eduardo ‘Chofis’ Lopez from Mexico’s Chivas de Guadalajara through June 2022.
Chofis, 27, is entering his second season with San Jose. He scored a team-high 12 goals, including three game-winning goals, and added four assists in 32 appearances in 2021. His 12 goals are the most by a Quakes player in his first season with the club since Ariel Graziani in 2002 (14) and became just the ninth player in team history to tally at least 12 goals in a single season. Among all newcomers in MLS in 2021, Chofis finished second in goals (12), first in non-penalty kick goals (11), and tied for first in goals + assists (16).
The Torreon, Mexico native also received several accolades in his debut MLS season. He earned the club’s Offensive Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year awards and was a finalist for the MLS Newcomer of the Year. The Mexican midfielder was also named to the MLS Team of the Week on three occasions (Weeks 25-27), was the MLS Player of the Week in Week 26 and was selected as the MLS Player of the Month for September.
