SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes defender Kip Colvey has been called up to the New Zealand National Team for the FIFA World Cup Intercontinental Playoff against Peru. The winner of the home and away playoff series, taking place Nov. 10 and Nov. 15, will secure a spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.
Colvey, 23, and the New Zealand National Team will face Peru at Westpac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand on Nov. 10 at 7:15 p.m. PT and again on Nov. 15 at 6:15 p.m. PT at Estadio Nacional in Lima, Peru. Aggregate score will determine the winner of the playoff.
New Zealand has made two previous World Cup appearances in 1982 and 2010, and qualified for South Africa 2010 with a 1-0 aggregate win over Bahrain in the intercontinental playoff. The Kiwis went undefeated in South Africa with draws against Slovakia, Paraguay and 2006 world champions Italy.
Colvey has made 13 appearances with the national team and spent the majority of the 2017 season on loan with Quakes’ USL affiliate Reno 1868 FC, making 10 starts.
