NEWS: Earthquakes Announce 2023 MLS Schedule

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes have unveiled their full schedule for the 2023 Major League Soccer season. The schedule is headlined by rivalry matches with the LA Galaxy and Los Angeles Football Club at Stanford Stadium and Levi’s Stadium, respectively, as well as the inaugural Leagues Cup which features every club from MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX. San Jose will play their two SoCal rivals three times each, with a second showdown against the Galaxy taking place at PayPal Park.

“We’re incredibly excited to provide Bay Area soccer fans with our most robust schedule ever,” said Earthquakes President Jared Shawlee. “Leagues Cup is a groundbreaking competition that we’re looking forward to participating in. We’re also elevating our two in-state rivalries by playing both teams from LA three times during the regular season, including marquee events at Stanford and Levi’s.

“Levi’s Stadium is a host venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and we’re proud to present our first match at the stadium since the historic announcement in June. We have a valuable partnership with 49ers, and this is another landmark event our community will enjoy.”

The 2023 season begins with a road match at Atlanta United FC on Saturday, Feb. 25 (4:30 p.m. PT) before the Quakes’ home opener vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, March 4 (7:30 p.m. PT). The Earthquakes will host a 20-year celebration for the 2003 MLS Cup championship squad that night, with more than 20 former members of the team scheduled to attend, including Dwayne De Rosario, Jeff Agoos, Brian Ching, Ian Russell, Ramiro Corrales, Ronnie Ekelund, Richard Mulrooney, Todd Dunivant, and Troy Dayak, among others. Ten thousand fans in attendance will receive a 2003 replica shersey.

New to the schedule in 2023 is a showdown with defending MLS Cup champions LAFC at Levi’s Stadium on Saturday, May 6 (4:30 p.m. PT). It marks the team’s first regular season game at Levi’s Stadium since 2015. Levi’s Stadium is one of 11 U.S.-based venues set to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and has a capacity of more than 70,000. The match will feature the Bay Area’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration, including a pregame fan festival, a halftime musical performance, pregame celebrity appearances, and appearances by former Mexico National Team players. The thrilling California Clasico at Stanford Stadium returns on Saturday, July 1 (7:30 p.m. PT). The annual event near the Fourth of July sees the heated rivalry between the Earthquakes and LA Galaxy renewed and features the Bay Area’s largest fireworks show postgame. The match drew more than 50k fans every year from 2012-19 and returned from a two-year hiatus in 2022.

Beginning July 21, regular season competition will pause for a month for the Leagues Cup, an inter-league tournament between Major League Soccer and Liga MX. All 47 teams from the two leagues will participate, with three teams earning qualification to the 2024 Concacaf Champions League. During the Group Stage, San Jose will host one match against a team from Liga MX and play one road match against an opponent from MLS. Fans will also get a rare second home match against the rival Galaxy at PayPal Park on Wednesday, Aug. 30 (7:30 p.m. PT). Due to the annual California Clasico at Stanford Stadium, the two teams have only met in the regular season at PayPal Park, with fans in attendance, on three prior occasions (2015, 2017, 2021).

The 2023 season will be the first of a 10-year partnership between MLS and Apple. Fans will be able to stream every single MLS match through the Apple TV app with no local blackouts or restrictions. MLS Season Pass launches February 1, 2023 and will include all MLS and Leagues Cup matches in both English and Spanish, as well as many MLS NEXT Pro and MLS NEXT matches. Clubs will also provide in-depth and behind-the-scenes content for fans to enjoy on the platform.
