SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes defender Carlos Akapo and forward Jeremy Ebobisse have been named to Major League Soccer’s Team of the Matchday, formerly known as Team of the Week, for Matchday 2. The two players both scored in the Earthquakes’ 2-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday. The match was the club’s 2023 home opener, which was played in front of a sellout crowd of 18,000 at PayPal Park.
After trailing Vancouver 1-0, San Jose equalized in the 68th minute on a header by Jeremy Ebobisse, his second goal in as many games this season. As the Quakes pushed for the go-ahead goal, the breakthrough finally came in the 77th minute on a near-post strike by defender Carlos Akapo, the first of his MLS career. Ebobisse also contributed to Akapo’s goal with an assist.
The MLS Team of the Matchday selection is Ebobisse’s eighth since joining the Earthquakes in August 2021. It is the first of Akapo’s MLS career in just his second appearance.
