SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes and U.S. Soccer announced today that Avaya Stadium will host the U.S. Women’s National Team for a friendly against Romania on Thursday, Nov. 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT and the match will be televised on ESPN2. The match will be the fourth international friendly held at Avaya Stadium this season, with the Quakes home having already hosted La Liga’s Real Sociedad and Liga MX’s C.F. Pachuca, Chivas de Guadalajara and Monarcas Morelia.
“We are excited to welcome the U.S. Women’s National Team back to Avaya Stadium after the exciting match played here on Mother’s Day last year,” said Earthquakes President Dave Kaval. “We couldn’t be more proud that the U.S. won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015 and are thrilled to host the squad for a second time.”
The Americans have a decorated international record. Most recently in 2015, the USWNT defeated Japan 5-2 in the FIFA World Cup Final in which Carli Lloyd scored a hat trick. In total, they have won three FIFA World Cups (1991, 1999, 2015) and four Olympic championships (1996, 2004, 2008, 2012). Dating back to 1991, the USWNT has placed in every World Cup, earning bronze in 1995, 2003 and 2007 and silver in 2011. Until the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil where they reached the quarterfinals, the national team had also won three consecutive gold medals (2004, 2008, 2012).
The USWNT features some of the biggest names in soccer, including Alex Morgan, Lloyd and Santa Clara University alumni Julie Johnston. The team last visited at Avaya Stadium on May 10, 2015 where they defeated the Republic of Ireland 3-0 as part of the Send-Off Series ahead of the World Cup.
Romania is ranked No. 36 in the FIFA rankings, the team’s highest since 2013. The Romanian Women’s National Football Team is currently competing to qualify for the 2017 UEFA Women’s Euro. They finished second behind France in Group 3 of qualifying, earning a spot in the playoffs for the final berth to the 16-nation tournament being held in the Netherlands.
Tickets for the match will be available to the general public on Friday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. PT via ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. A presale for U.S. Soccer Members Priority will start on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 10 a.m. and U.S. Soccer Members Preferred at 2 p.m. PT on Oct. 11. Earthquakes Season Ticket Holders will also be able to participate in a presale, starting on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 10 a.m. PT. Tickets will not be sold at Avaya Stadium until the day of the event.
