There were 50,850 fans on hand at Stanford Stadium to watch the San Jose Earthquakes defeat the LA Galaxy 3-0 back on June 29. The Quakes hope to replicate the result tonight when they serve as the visiting side at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson.
Both teams will be receiving reinforcements for the fixture. The Quakes see the return of U.S. National Team defender Nick Lima and Panamanian Harold Cummings, who have been the team’s primary starters at left back and center back this season, while the Galaxy gain at least two in Mexico National Team leaders Jonathan Dos Santos and Uriel Antuna.
San Jose has gotten the better of the Galaxy of late, earning an impressive 3-1-1 record against their California Clasico rivals since July 2017. In fact, the Galaxy have only scored more than one goal once in those five meetings – a 3-3 draw at Stanford last June.
The Galaxy are in good form and have won four of their previous six games. Somehow, though, they have slipped up at home and dropped three of their last four at Dignity Health Sports Park, save for a 2-0 win over Toronto FC on July 4. They haven’t defeated a Western Conference side at home since April 28.
LA is led by Dos Santos and superstar forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who ranks second in MLS with 13 goals. Quakes defender Florian Jungwirth was tasked with marking him for large periods of their last meeting and did well to prevent any real scoring threats.
The match kicks off at 8 p.m. and will be broadcast live on UniMas, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF. There are also three viewing parties in the Bay Area for fans to attend. More details can be found here.
