The San Jose Earthquakes (2-5-3; 9 pts.) will face Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2-6-1; 7 pts.) at BC Place in Vancouver, B.C. on Saturday, May 14 at 4 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 (English), and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).
San Jose is looking to continue their strong run of play under interim head coach Alex Covelo. Since Covelo has taken the reins, the Earthquakes are 2-1-0 in three regular season matches (4-1-0 overall), including league wins over Seattle Sounders FC and the Colorado Rapids. The Earthquakes are coming off a U.S. Open Cup victory over Sounders FC on Wednesday, in which they handed Seattle just their second loss at Starfire Sports Complex ever (21-2-1).
San Jose utilized a heavily rotated squad in Wednesday’s victory, helping keep many usual starters fresh for this weekend’s match. The only starters on Wednesday who have started at least half of the MLS games to date were Tanner Beason, Cade Cowell, Eric Remedi, and Paul Marie, while key figures like Cristian Espinoza, Jamiro Monteiro, Jeremy Ebobisse, Marcos Lopez, Jackson Yueill, and Francisco Calvo were used as late-game substitutes.
Vancouver is currently in 14th place in the Western Conference and has scored a conference-low seven goals in their nine matches to date. Seven different players have scored a single goal thus far for Whitecaps FC, including Designated Players Lucas Cavallini and Ryan Gauld. Vancouver won their most recent MLS match 1-0 over Toronto FC on May 8.
Whitecaps FC also played a midweek match, defeating Valour FC 2-0 in the Canadian Championship.
