The San Jose Earthquakes will face Sacramento Republic FC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 at Heart Health Park on Wednesday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. PT. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Quakes advanced to the Round of 16 following wins over Bay Cities FC and four-time U.S. Open Cup champions Seattle Sounders FC. The Quakes’ dramatic victory over Seattle was capped by a game-winning penalty shootout conversion by goalkeeper Matt Bersano.
Republic FC defeated Central Valley Fuego FC and Phoenix Rising FC to punch their ticket to the Round of 16. Both matches were played on Sacramento’s home turf, where they have amassed a 15-1 record in U.S. Open Cup play.
San Jose and Sacramento have met three prior times in U.S. Open Cup competition, with the Quakes prevailing on all three occasions. Wednesday’s match is the first such meeting in the state’s capital following two games at PayPal Park (2017, 2019) and one at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco (2014).
The two clubs have a long and storied history that includes an MLS-USL affiliation from 2014 to 2016. Many Quakes players cut their teeth in Sacramento during the partnership, including Loomis native Tommy Thompson.
Wednesday night’s winner will travel to face either the LA Galaxy or LAFC in the Quarterfinals in late June.
