Kate Scott, the Earthquakes sideline reporter and a KNBR morning sports anchor, makes a tough job look easy when she darts onto the field for quickie interviews with players still breathing heavily from competition.
She knows the game, and her craft, well.
Moreover, Scott, who is a lesbian, appreciates being associated the Quakes, who have welcomed the LGBT community into their extended soccer family. Scott was featured during Equality Night at Buck Shaw Stadium on Sunday, in conjunction with the Quakes game against the Houston Dynamo. “Working for the club I grew up rooting for is incredible and as a member of the LGBT community, the Quakes' ongoing efforts to make all of their supporters feel welcome has simply taken my fandom to another level," Scott said. “Nights like this matter. When a club you support takes the time to stand up and say 'We support you, too,' those words, those actions go a long way.”
Issues involving gays in sports have become front-page news these days. Beyond the headlines, the Quakes are doing their part to send out a consistently positive message. The club has asked You Can Play members to meet with players and coaches to discuss issues facing LGBT athletes in sports.
“They have built a great organization and we look forward to learning from their expertise and to furthering our work toward true unity in our locker room,” Club President Dave Kaval said recently.
For her part, Scott says the Quakes have welcomed her “with open arms” from her first day on the job, which allowed her to focus on being the best reporter that she can be. The Quakes, she says, truly embody the words You Can Play.
Whether it's related to sports talk or the causes she represents, Scott seems to enjoy being out front.
As a sophomore at Cal, Scott became the school's first female yell-leader. That led Scott to write for The Bear Insider magazine and its corresponding ESPN affiliated website, making her the youngest and lone female writer on staff.
In a soccer sense, Scott has some game. A multi-sport athlete, she won a California Youth Soccer Association State Cup title with the Clovis United Heat and a California Interscholastic Federation championship at Clovis High School. She was also a member of the Quakes Blue Crew when they won the MLS Cup in 2003.
In addition to being on-air at KNBR from 5 a.m. to noon, Scott also co-hosts the Giants' SFG Live webcast found at SFGiants.com and will soon be anchoring Saturday night sports for NBC here in the Bay Area.
Her star is on the rise, and the LBGT community and the Quakes appear to have a very good friend in Scott.
