Major League Soccer posted this article yesterday explaining how third-place teams will be seeded. READ HERE.
We already knew that the San Jose Earthquakes, winners of Group B, would face the third-place team in either Group A, C or D. How it was determined which of those three the Quakes would actually face was a bit more uncertain.
There appears to be 10 scenarios that could still come into effect:
In seven of them (70% chance), San Jose would face the Wild Card team from Group D: either Real Salt Lake or Minnesota United FC. RSL is currently in third and have already played all three of their matches, but a multi-goal loss by Minnesota vs. Colorado tonight would see the Loons fall to third on goal differential.
In the other three scenarios (30% chance), San Jose would face New York City FC, who finished third in Group A.
There is no longer a scenario in which the Earthquakes face the third-place team from Group C, which ended up being the Montreal Impact. If the Impact advance at all, they would face Orlando City SC.
Ultimately what the scenarios above are dependent on is which four groups have a third-place team that advances.
Who would you rather the Earthquakes face out of New York City FC, Real Salt Lake and Minnesota United FC?
