Earthquake Girls’ Academy midfielder Sophie Jones was called up to the U-17 Women’s National Team in February to compete in the Copa Provincia de Buenos Aires tournament in Mar Del Plata, Argentina. Jones is a Menlo Park native and has competed for the U-19 San Jose Earthquakes Girls’ Academy since its founding in October 2016.
The U-17s faced top-tiered Chile, Uruguay and host-country Argentina at the tournament in preparation for the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship in April. In their first match, Jones started and played the full 90 minutes against Argentina, helping the U.S. secure a 9-0 victory. The U-17s faced Uruguay in their second match of the tournament, Jones started and played 63 minutes before being subbed off in the 4-1 win. Jones did not feature in the U-17’s final match against Chile as the U.S. secured a 1-0 win to cap off their undefeated streak in the Copa Provinica Tournament.
The U-17’s performance will give the U.S. confidence ahead of the CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship which will qualify three countries for the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.
Jones earned numerous accolades in 2017 by Top Drawer Soccer, including 20th best player for the class of 2019, second-best player in California, third-best player in the Northern California and Hawaii region and eighth-best midfielder in the nation. Jones is marked as a four-star recruit and has committed to play collegiately at Duke University.
