On Monday, members of the San Jose Earthquakes joined Oakland Raiders punter Marquette King, wide receiver Seth Roberts and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Rod Streater for Richmond Mayor Tom Butt’s second annual community fund golf tournament benefiting Richmond Youth Sports.
“It was great to meet the Mayor and other pro athletes out there,” Chris Wondolowski said. “Jordan [Stewart] was the one who got us involved with the event. Marquette King and Seth Roberts of the Raiders were out there along with Rod Streater, former Raiders wide receiver who is now with the 49ers.”
Joining Wondolowski and Stewart at the charity event were teammates Bryan Meredith, Shea Salinas, Chad Barrett, and Andrew Tarbell. Asked who represented the Quakes well on the golf course, Wondolowski jokingly claimed that his “back hurts a bit from carrying these guys.”
“We did well. We played scramble. We shot five under par, which was pretty solid,” Wondolowski said. “It was actually a pretty well rounded group. We had a couple birdies where we used everyone’s shot, which was nice.
“It was a huge honor,” Wondolowski said. “It’s always fun to hang out with those guys and know them on a more personal level. Sometimes you don’t get to see them in that light so it was a great getting to hang out with them and know that they’re good people as well.”
This isn't the first time the Quakes have mixed it up with King and Streater. In 2014, the punter and wide receiver paid a visit to a training session at Buck Shaw Stadium to see what it was like to be a professional soccer player. The two football players participated in 5v2 drills at the beginning of practice and faced off against Stewart and Wondolowski at the end of the day.
