This past Saturday, the San Jose Earthquakes U-16 Girls' Academy team had the experience of a lifetime, playing in a California Clasico at Avaya Stadium. Over 1,000 fans came out to support the reigning USSDA champs as they looked to beat LA in the first-ever Girls' Academy match played in the Quakes' stadium. In the 34th minute of the match, Peyton Marcisz put the Quakes up 1-0.
The Quakes were dominant in the match but were unable to stretch their lead by the 90th minute. In the third minute of stoppage time, the Galaxy scored an equalizer to stun the crowd at Avaya. At that moment, it would be easy to accept the inevitable 1-1 draw but the fans were more than optimistic. Chants of "Beat LA" filled the stadium as the Quakes fought for another opportunity at goal. Then in typical Cali Clasico fashion, the Quakes brought the fans to their feet with an insane last-minute finish.
When the whistle blew, the girls celebrated a moment they will never forget.
