Historic stats behind the Earthquakes’ recent run of form
Anyone paying attention could tell you the San Jose Earthquakes have drastically turned things around this season under new head coach Matias Almeyda. The stats below show just how well things have been going for San Jose, who now hold a playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Five in a Row
The Quakes are undefeated in five consecutive MLS matches (3-0-2), their longest unbeaten streak since July 16 – Aug. 12, 2016. A win or draw vs. LA on Saturday would see the Earthquakes have a six-match unbeaten streak for the first time since 2013. San Jose also has an active six-match unbeaten streak at home (5-0-1), in which they’ve outscored opponents 16-4.
Good Sample Size
The Earthquakes are 5-1-4 (19 pts.) in their last 10 matches. LAFC is the only Western Conference club to earn more points over their previous 10 games (6-1-3; 21 pts.). The Quakes have scored 19 goals in their last 10 matches, tied for third most by any team in their last 10 games.
In-Form Player
Earthquakes midfielder Vako scored two goals in Wednesday night’s 2-0 victory over Houston. He has now scored five goals in his last three matches across all competitions.
Can I Help You?
Midfielder Cristian Espinoza now has a team-best seven assists this season, tied for sixth most in Major League Soccer, and is the only player in MLS with four game-winning assists. He is the first Earthquakes player to tally 7+ assists before the end of June since Marvin Chavez in 2012 (7). No SJ player has reached eight assists before July 1 since Richard Mulrooney in 2000 (8).
Off the Board
Wednesday’s 2-0 victory marked goalkeeper Daniel Vega’s fourth shutout in 2019, fifth most in the Western Conference. The Earthquakes recorded two shutouts all of 2018.
In the Hunt
The Quakes find themselves in sixth in the Western Conference, just four points out of third place. A win vs. the LA Galaxy on Saturday coupled with a draw or loss by Houston in New England could see San Jose surge to fifth.
