SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced the launch of their 2023 MLS Playoff push campaign, “There’s an Earthquake Coming,” to capture the pressure, anticipation, and energy building up to the last three matches of the season. The Quakes prepare to face a brand-new playoff format and announce the club’s current qualifying situation, viewing parties for away matches and activations taking place around the community.
A New Playoff Format
This year features the debut of a new format for the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams of each conference automatically qualify for the first round, while eighth and ninth place play in a Wild Card match for the final playoff spot.
The first round consists of a best-of-three series with the first team to win two matches advancing, with the first seed facing the eighth seed, and so on. The following rounds will be single elimination.
Where We Stand
The Earthquakes remain in contention for their first playoff appearance since 2020, sitting in eighth place with three games remaining. As it stands, the Quakes qualify a Wild Card spot and would need to win a play-in match to enter the postseason.
