SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes defender Clarence Goodson underwent a successful discectomy on Thursday afternoon to repair a herniated disc in his back. The procedure was performed by Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles and is expected to keep him sidelined for the remainder of the 2016 season.
Goodson, 34, started the first two games for San Jose this season, helping the Quakes earn victories against the Colorado Rapids (1-0) and Portland Timbers (2-1) before sustaining the injury. The defender joined the Earthquakes on June 28, 2013 from Denmark’s Brondby IF and has appeared and started in 49 MLS regular season games during his four seasons with the club. At the international level, Goodson represented the U.S. Men’s National Team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa as well as the 2009, 2011 and 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cups.
The Earthquakes will face Toronto FC Saturday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m., presented by Benjamin Moore. Saturday’s matchup will be first time Toronto FC will play at Avaya Stadium. Having not lost to a Canadian side at home since May 29, 2010, the home side will look continue the undefeated stretch. Saturday’s match will also celebrate Italian Heritage night, and the first 6,000 fans to arrive at Avaya Stadium will receive a Benjamin Moore keychain.
