The San Jose Earthquakes are continuing to make the team’s youth academy a priority. After expanding the academy to include full USSDA-competing squads at the U-12 and U-13 levels, the Quakes took another step forward in their plan to become the premier youth development program in Northern California.
On Friday, April 22, the City of San Jose reached agreements with the Earthquakes, Guadalupe River Park Conservancy and other stakeholders, which will allow the partners to formally pursue a seven-field community soccer field project at the Guadalupe Gardens.
The seven-field complex will be the official home of the Earthquakes Academy, allowing the teams to train in one unified location and build a sense of togetherness with a world-class facility. The complex will also be capable of holding local, national and international tournaments, making San Jose a global destination for youth soccer.
"We're moving forward on a transformative opportunity for our city and for generations of our kids,” said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo. “The Guadalupe Gardens site provides an ideal location for this project, with space to accommodate seven fields and a soccer academy that will serve the growing number of soccer-crazed kids in our community. The proposed development of a 6-acre park alongside the soccer fields will also enhance the overall beauty and amenities offered in the larger Guadalupe River Park, and ensure that this park serves as a recreational destination for people of all ages and interests.
“I'd like to thank the San Jose Earthquakes for agreeing to help fund this project and the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy for their ongoing collaboration. I'd also like to thank the FAA for coming to an agreement with our Airport that will allow us to utilize the site, with special gratitude to Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren for her critical advocacy during this process.”
