You’re officially a Quakes Devotion Scarf recipient! Explain what it means to you to get this honor?
"My dad was my first coach in 1975 with the AYSL Pele generation. We were big into soccer. In 1977, my dad took me to my first Earthquakes game and we were season ticket holder for years after that. My father passed a few years ago and when I got the award, I thought about how he would be looking down on me and how proud he must've been. I've been coaching for over 20 years. I've probably worked with over 15,000 kids. I probably work with 500 kids a week. When you're setting up fields at 7 a.m., you wonder if people notice. The fact that people appreciate it means a lot to me. This award to me represents the thousands of kids I've been able to coach and touch over the years. It's hard to put into words really. It's been a journey that's been worth while."
Talk to us about your Quakes fandom. How long have you been cheering on the black & blue? What is your most memorable moment?
"The Goonie season for sure. The year of the Goonies. The Goonies really embodied what I love about soccer and that is a team that plays together like brothers and that's what that team was. You could see the chemistry that team had. Stars are great, but teams with chemistry are even better."
Who is your favorite Quakes player and why?
"It's going to be [Chris] Wondolowski. He's a Bay Area guy and an underdog. He's the best example he could be for my players. He proves that being a good person is important."
What would be your message to Quakes fans out there?
"The Earthquakes are about community, family and inspiring the young players. When we're all supporting our team together, it ties our community together and it's really unique. They're a special team because they're the peoples team."
